Getting Better & Better!

April was a busy and exciting month for SDAGC.  We have graduated three classes of New Dancers; several of our officers and delegates attended the Southern District Sprint Festival in Ada, OK, and the Turtle Creek Cloggers have been having a great time performing at various functions in Tulsa and surrounding areas.

May is already booked solid with activities for everyone.  On Sunday, May 3, the Square Dance Association of Green Country will host a General Meeting that will serve as a “Get Acquainted” opportunity for members of our clubs or anyone interested in more information about dancing.  We have two new clubs that will have their official start-up this month and SDAGC has been invited to perform at the Tulsa Mayfest on May 17th.   The Turtle Creek Cloggers are working hard this month preparing for competition in Grove, OK in June, and are performing at different venues throughout May.

Please take the time to enjoy the Newsletter, and keep it handy so that you won’t miss any of the great dances and events we have going this month.

President’s  Note

In over 40 years, we are now the newest addition to the Oklahoma State Square Dance Federation and we strive to continue to grow with the family orientated clubs.  First of all, we would like to welcome Boot Scooters of Bartlesville as the newest addition to our Association.  To keep everyone abreast of our activities here is recap:

  • The OSU Creek County 4-H students have just graduated their first set of lessons.  We will continue to work with the 4-H to encourage the children to make square dancing and line dancing a fun activity.  We will set up a club where the children can meet and have more lessons available in the fall.
  • The students of the Tulsa Home School Organization will be graduating in May and we encourage them to join any club within the Tulsa area so that they can continue to practice what they have learned.
  • The lesson held at the Boston Avenue Methodist Church in Tulsa has graduated new students and have formed the Southern Hills Club which will meet on the 3rd Tuesday of every month.
  • The Vintage Club (Old Timers calls) will begin on the 2nd Tuesday in May and will meet every 2nd Tuesday of the month.  We would like to welcome and congratulate Cecil Burton and his Taw Barbara in their first club in Tulsa.
  • Lake Keystone Squares began their lesson on April 18 which will be held on Saturday mornings (9:30-12:30) at the Mannford First Baptist Church.

Our visit to the Southern District Spring Festival on April 18 in Ada was a rewarding and enjoyable visit.  We encourage everyone and anyone to join us in getting to know the other districts and to expand the friendship outside of our own.  On behalf of SDAGC, we would like to extend our gratitude to all who supported us and continue to support us especially with our lessons.  Our goal to promote square dancing within the family is still going strong and together we will conquer any challenges that lie ahead.

The Callers Corner…

Steve & Glenna Estep

Let’s talk about something that happens to ALL square dancers – The Square Breaks Down.  What happens next?  Quite often, most dancers try and get paired up with their partner and then square back up.  This is truly the wrong thing to do.  If you square up, you will have to wait until the Caller says “Allemande Left” before you can start dancing again and if the Caller is not ready to resolve the square, you could be standing there for a little while.  The right thing to do is quickly find a partner and get in lines facing in.  This will let the Caller know you were broke down (his or her fault, of course) and within a couple of calls, will have the floor in lines just like you.  Then you can begin dancing once again.  Everybody dancing means – Happy Dancers and Happy Callers.”

Remember Ladies… “Yellow Rock the Caller”

4-H Graduation

The Creek County 4-H Class held their graduation on Tuesday, April 28th.    SDAGC had a great time hosting the ceremonies with cake and ice cream.  Caller Steve Estep and Taw Glenna handed out Certificates of completion and had fun calling a special tip for the new dancers with their “stick-figure” partners.  As a special treat, 13-year–old Chance Hopkins called a tip for the new and experienced dancers.  We look forward to hearing more from this kid.

New Caller is discovered!

Tulsa Homeschool Lessons

The Homeschool lessons ended two weeks short of graduation on a sad note as Caller Richie Richardson was rushed to the hospital with kidney stones on April 21st.  Richie is now home and feeling much better.  Cards may be sent to Richie Richardson, 13510 N. 91st East Ave., Collinsville, OK  74021, or you may call him at 918-371-4757.

The Square Dance Association of Green Country gives a big round of applause to Richie for all of his hard work in giving homeschoolers and their parents exposure to Square Dancing.  He conducted lessons weekly free of any charge to the District.  Thank You, Richie!  Another big round of applause goes to all the Angels who came faithfully each week to help.  Thank you, Angels.

Hopefully some of the Homeschoolers and their parents will continue their lessons at other Square Dance clubs.  They had lots of fun learning the dance moves and that is what Square Dancing is all about – FAMILY FUN.

Lake Keystone Squares

Lessons are now being held at First Baptist Church Outreach Center, 105 Greenwood, Mannford from 9:30-12:30 Saturday mornings.  We need angels!

Our ticket Chairman, Jim & Julia Reese, have State Festival tickets.  We will be setting up ticket sales and will let you know where and when.

Lake Keystone Squares welcomes the Bartlesville Boot Scooters into the Square Dance Association of Green Country.

Come and Give Us A Name!

The TBA named square dance club will meet once a month, on the 3rd Tuesday of each month beginning May 19th, 7:00-10:00 p.m.  Cecil Burton will be Caller and the dances will be held at the Southern Hills United Methodist Church on Lewis between 61st & 71st Streets, across from Southern Hills golf course.  Enter through the back door of the church.  The first dance will your opportunity to name the Club – if your suggestion for the Club name is picked by Cecil, you will get a year’s free membership for you and your partner.  This will be Cecil Burton’s first club in Tulsa in a long time.  Join a new Club and try out new and exciting dancing to one of the best Callers in the state!

New Club Brings Back the Oldies!

The Vintage Club will dance to the old calls (calls from 40-50 years ago), similar to the dances Ernie Haynes and Cecil Williams hosted the “Old Calls and Callers Dance.”  Cecil gave lessons last January to see if there was enough interest and there were consistently four or more squares each Saturday.  He will be mentoring David Worthington to be familiar with the old calls –Red Wing, Chase the Rabbit, Grand Parade, etc.

The Vintage club will meet at the Army Reserve Center straight across from TCC West campus (on West 41st Street between Berryhill and Sand Springs) from 7:00-10:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 12th.  The club will meet monthly on the second Tuesday of each month.  When entering the building, go in the front door and straight back to the large dance area.

State Festival Ticket Sales

The theme for this year’s state ticket campaign is “Lasso Your Dream, Christmas is our Theme”.   We want all of your prizes and gifts to reflect a great time and if you win one and so desire you can use it for a Christmas present for your family or friends.

The Grand Prize is a beautiful 1966 red Mustang Convertible, restored five years ago.

In addition to these prizes the first person from each District to sell and turn in to their ticket chairman 1,200 tickets, with a collectible Christmas ornament by Jim Shore.  Please notify us when you turn these in and we will verify with the ticket chairman.

We would like for every ticket chairman to supply us with the number of members in their Districts by the time tickets are handed out.  The winning District will be decided by the highest percentage of tickets sold per member.  This should be a fair way for smaller Districts to compete with the larger ones.

Our goal this year is for everyone to sell as many tickets as possible to keep our hobby of Square Dancing in Oklahoma live and well.   This is a great way to support the State, your District, and your Club and have fun in the process.
